- Come up with one idea grounded in the skills and interests that are most prominent in your IMM portfolio;
- Arrive at another idea by taking the skills and interests in Idea 1 completely off the table;
- Dream up a third idea that intrigues and inspires you but otherwise disregards any concern for future employment 🙂
- completely out of left field
overall while thinking about ideas for a thesis project, i haven’t had much luck in coming up with a “revolutionary” idea i really like? these are general ideas i think i might be interested in, with nothing especially new yet.
- learn about rendering and start to work on rendered character and monster designs for a series- either for ttrpgs or a video game/ show theme.
- learn 2d animation for a short sequence or idea, or for a comic you can interact with
- start to create rules and build my own ttrpg for people to play
- unsure of how or what i’d need to do to learn it, but creating a small interactable game that works like a ttrpg with random encounters, users can create stories/modules
other thoughts from class:
-animating in blender using the grease pencil
-3d modeled and animated character, similar to justin- excuse to learn 3D animation, im already a character designer??
Since you’re already a character designer, I’m curious if you could take your existing designs and put them together to tell some kind of short story? I feel like this lines up with your second idea, the only keyword I see is 2D animation. I’m assuming your character designs are primarily 3D? If you’re unsure of how to pick your ideas/come up with more concrete concepts, I find it helpful to see what skills you have and which new skills you’d like to have under your belt. Maybe talk to other animators/gamers in the class and see what they have to say. I’m unfortunately not the best person to talk to lol
I’m really glad I got to see and talk about your work in the character design class the other day. Your characters are wonderful and your skills in that area are already strong and apparent. Yes, you could use your thesis project as an opportunity to develop related skills in 3D. Yes, that’s undeniably practical 🙂 But what I was most intrigued by in our conversation the was the relationship between your character visualizations, the stories and the mechanics of the TTRPGs you’re playing, and the other players. Clearly you have an enthusiasm for the games, not just the visual art, so it seems to me like a promising thesis project could built around exploring that inter-relationship. Along the lines of the questions I was asking the other day… how have the web and social media and platforms like Discord opened opportunities and changed attitudes toward developing characters for these games? Seems like there’s a project at the intersection of visual art / games / social technology that would allow you to “add something new to the conversation” as we’ve been encouraging in class.
